Ahila Gulasekaram's love for dance began at a very young age and she has been studying Bharata Natyam for the past 25 years under her guru Ramya Harishankar (Arpana School of Dance, Irvine, CA). Since her Arangetram (solo debt) in 1991 as a member of the Arpana Dance Company (ADC), Gulasekaram has performed in all of the company's major productions. She has performed extensively in Southern California in festivals and events at the Getty Center, Dance Kaleidoscope, Santa Monica Festival, Nations of San Diego, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts to name a few and has also performed in several dance demonstrations at UCI, UCR and UCSD. With ADC, Gulasekaram has toured the US, Europe (1997 & 2000) and India (1995 & 2007). A recipient of the Kohinoor Award (1998) for Classical Arts and Culture, her dancing was more recently featured in a collage presented at the prestigious Pageant of the Masters (2006) in Laguna Beach as a prelude to the section entitled "Divine Lovers." She has been actively assisting Ramya with teaching and other aspects of performance.
Saru Janahan began studying dance in 1976 under Mythili Raghavan, a disciple of Adyar K.Lakshman, in Lusaka, Zambia. In 1980 she moved to the United States and continued her dance education under Anita Dikshet and Rathna Kumar. At that time, she had the opportunity to perform locally in her home town of Rochester, NY. In 2002 she started learning dance from Ramya Harishankar. Under Ramya Harishankar's guidance she enjoys teaching and sharing her enthusiasm for the art of dance with budding young dancers!
